Kit at a glance
Mvemba a Nzinga cannot found a religion — and profits anyway: whatever faith reaches his cities pays out its beliefs plus bonus Great Person points, and relics and sculptures pour food, production and gold into the mbanza-dwelling Kongo.
Opening: the first 60 turns
Mvemba a Nzinga skips Astrology entirely, which frees the early research order for Pottery, Bronze Working to reveal rainforest chops and Writing for the first Campus. Settle the capital where woods or rainforest surround the center, since the Mbanza later needs those tiles, but do not clear them yet. Open Scout, Warrior, Settler, Settler, then Monument in every city; Kongo's Palace holds extra Great Work slots, so culture matters from turn one. Civics go Craftsmanship, Foreign Trade, Early Empire and then straight up the culture branch toward Drama and Poetry. Meet neighbors quickly and note who is founding religions, because the leader ability only starts paying once one of those religions has settled into a majority of Kongo's cities.

How to play it
Let a strong neighbor convert you — pick the religion with the best follower beliefs and enjoy it rent-free. Chase Great Writers, Artists and relics hard; Kongo's slots and bonuses make it the best Great-Work economy in the game. Mbanzas let you settle rainforest heartland.
Victory paths
Culture is the only path the kit was built for, and it reaches it through Great Works rather than wonders: bonus Great Artist and Musician points fill the Theater Squares and the Palace's extra slots, while relics and sculptures also feed food, production and gold back into the cities. The Apostles Mvemba receives when a Mbanza or Theater Square completes are best used to spread the adopted religion into his own remaining cities, keeping the belief bonuses active, and any surplus becomes relic hunters. Diplomacy is the secondary route because Kongo's gold and culture translate easily into favor and the AI rarely sees a religious-free civ as a threat. There is no science or domination version of this leader worth pursuing.
Synergies: city-states, wonders, policies
The best religion to host is one whose founder took Reliquaries or a worship building with Great Work slots, so watch the neighbors' belief picks and let the most useful one in. Pingala with the Grants promotion accelerates the Great Person race further, and Amani parked in Antananarivo adds culture for every Great Person earned while Nan Madol rewards coastal district builders. For pantheons, Kongo cannot build Holy Sites under Mvemba, so faith-oriented pantheons are wasted. Apadana and Kilwa Kisiwani favor the envoy game, while Great Library and Oxford University are wonders worth a bid because Kongo's production in Mbanza cities is unusually high for a culture civ.
Weaknesses and counters
Everything hinges on a neighbor bringing a religion; on a map where nobody spreads faith toward Kongo, the leader ability never activates and the Apostle stream never starts. Being unable to build Holy Sites also means little faith of your own, so Great Person patronage with faith, Naturalists and Rock Bands all stay hard to reach unless a belief supplies faith through other means. The Mbanza's late unlock at Guilds leaves the early game housing-starved in rainforest cities, and the Ngao Mbeba is a defensive unit, not a conquest tool. Rivals beat Mvemba by refusing to convert him, by converting him with a deliberately weak religion, or by walking through the rainforest with Knights while his army consists of shield bearers.
