MINOR_CIV_JAKARTA_UNIQUE_INFLUENCE_BONUSStrategy guide
Your trading posts in foreign cities add +1 Gold to every route of yours passing through or ending there. It compounds with time: the more foreign cities you have traded with historically, the more toll booths your future routes collect. Start international routes early and vary destinations to seed posts everywhere.
Best civs & plans
Long-game value for trade empires — Portugal and Mali again — and any civ running the full trader capacity from Commercial Hubs and Harbors.
Envoy plan
Jakarta rewards patience more than speed. The first envoy is an easy call for the trade-type gold in the capital and Markets, but suzerainty is only useful once you have several Trading Posts in foreign cities, which takes a handful of completed international routes. Plan for three envoys around the time your second Commercial Hub or Harbor finishes and your trader count is climbing. The AI treats Jakarta as a mid-priority target, so a three-envoy lead is usually contested by the renaissance; budget one or two spare envoys. Six envoys here is only sensible for a trade-focused empire with Stock Exchanges, where the top gold tier stacks with the suzerain tolls.
Value by era
During the ancient era Jakarta does nothing for you beyond the envoy tiers, because Trading Posts do not exist until routes complete. The classical era is the seeding phase: each finished route to a different foreign city plants a post, and posts placed now are the ones every later route will pass through. The medieval and renaissance eras are where the tolls start to add up, particularly on a Pangaea map where a route to a distant capital crosses three or four cities already holding your posts. By the industrial era, an established trade network can be collecting several extra gold per route with no further effort. The bonus keeps growing as long as your traders exist; it has no expiry, only a slow start.
Pitfalls and how to protect it
The classic error is sending every trader to the same lucrative city, which builds one post and leaves the rest of the map unseeded. Rotate destinations early even at a small yield cost. Posts in city-state cities do count, so routes to the city-states you are courting for envoys do double duty. Be wary of neighbors you plan to conquer: capturing a city that holds your post keeps the post, but the route through it may stop being foreign, and Jakarta only pays for foreign cities. If Jakarta is captured, your existing posts remain but the toll bonus ends, so a Protectorate War is worth calling only if the trade income is central to your economy.
