Wonders that compete for the same tiles
From the placement data: these wonders share a placement requirement with Broadway. A city meant to hold both needs a separate qualifying tile for each.
- Bolshoi Theatre — both next to a Theater Square
Is it worth building?
A late culture bomb: instant inspiration and Great Work of Music slots when theming is at its most valuable. Culture-victory empires should fight for it; everyone else can pass.
Placement & timing tips
Theater Square adjacency again — same culture core as your other tourism assets so multipliers stack. Prioritize it right as Great Musicians start appearing.
When to build it — and when not to
- Build it when
- Build when a culture win is genuinely in sight and Great Musicians are queued with nowhere to perform — the instant inspiration also lands right as modern-era civics get expensive.
- Skip it when
- Skip when your tourism problem is multipliers rather than works — open borders, trade routes and flight-era infrastructure raise output more than a few extra slots. Seaside resorts often out-earn it too.
Which city should build it
Same rule as the Bolshoi, flat land on a Theater Square, and the same answer: the city that already holds your other tourism wonders, so its Theater Square keeps collecting adjacency from each of them. By Mass Media that city should have a powered Broadcast Center, an Art Museum themed or nearly so, and the appeal to support Seaside Resorts or a National Park nearby. If the culture core is out of flat tiles, a second Theater Square city with a Harbor is an acceptable substitute, but a pure production city is not, because the value lies in stacking multipliers, not hammers.
Winning the race
Culture-victory AI leaders want Broadway badly and often arrive at Mass Media before you, since the AI's civic pace accelerates late. Expect a real race whenever a rival has been sending rock bands or showing high tourism against you. Winning it comes down to preparation rather than reaction: keep an industrial-era Great Engineer such as Gustave Eiffel unspent, keep two builders with chops staged beside the culture city, and be ready to switch the queue the turn the civic completes. Gothic Architecture no longer applies this late, so hammers and charges are all you have. The tell that you are losing is a rival who unlocked Radio and Mass Media within a few turns of each other while you are still finishing Ideology.
If you lose it: alternatives
Music slots are the scarcest Great Work space in the game, but Broadcast Centers carry one each, so a second and third Theater Square city with Broadcast Centers holds a full roster of Musicians without any wonder. The inspiration payout is worth roughly a handful of turns of culture and is not worth mourning. Put the freed production into what actually ends culture games: Seaside Resorts on appeal coast, National Parks bought with Naturalists, and rock bands purchased with faith. If your tourism is relic-driven, Cristo Redentor is unlocked by the same civic and is usually the less contested of the two.
