Wonders that compete for the same tiles

From the placement data: these wonders share a placement requirement with Mahabodhi Temple. A city meant to hold both needs a separate qualifying tile for each.

Is it worth building?

Free apostles and diplomatic-victory points — a straight shot of religious tempo. The apostles alone can found your beliefs or start a conversion war; the victory point ages well in long games.

Placement & timing tips

Woods adjacency next to a Holy Site — reserve a forest tile in your faith capital early. Most valuable while beliefs worth taking still remain unpicked.

When to build it — and when not to

Build it when
Build when you founded a late religion and the belief pool is draining — the free apostles let you enhance and pick beliefs before faster faith engines lock in the good ones.
Skip it when
Skip once your religion is already enhanced and faith buys apostles on demand — the wonder then duplicates what your Holy Sites do. A temple wave across your cities spreads pressure further.

Which city should build it

The awkward part is the woods: the wonder must stand on a wooded tile touching a Holy Site that already has a Temple, so the host is the faith city where you deliberately did not chop. That points to a capital or first expansion with a wooded river or hill cluster, where the Holy Site went in beside two or three forest tiles for adjacency and one of them can be spent. Hills woods are ideal because they keep producing while they wait. Mountains, the river and the city center can fill the district's other sides. Since the free apostles appear in this city but both effects are empire-level, production and Temple timing matter more than faith output; a Holy Site city with a Workshop finishes it in the medieval window, a tiny faith outpost does not.

Winning the race

Founders only, which narrows the field to two or three religious AIs, but they rate apostles highly and start it as soon as Theology lands. Fortunately an AI Holy Site with both a Temple and an adjacent woods tile is uncommon, so in roughly half of games it survives the whole medieval era. The key to securing it is the Temple: Holy Site buildings can be bought with faith, so purchase the Temple before Theology arrives and queue the wonder the turn the civic completes. Gothic Architecture usually is not available yet because Divine Right comes later; chop a nearby woods and boost it with Magnus instead, never the tile reserved for the wonder. The losing signs are beliefs vanishing from the list one by one and gossip of a start.

If you lose it: alternatives

Two free apostles are, in the end, units you can buy with faith, so a few turns of income from two Holy Sites with Temples produce the same result. The loss only really hurts in a belief-grab race, and then the first apostle purchase should jump ahead of every other expense. Diplomatic victory points have other sources: World Congress resolutions, emergencies you join and win, and the Statue of Liberty late in the game all award the same kind of point. Redirect the hammers into Hagia Sophia or the Meenakshi Temple, which use the same Holy Site frontage, or, if religion is a secondary axis, into Temples in every city so apostles can be bought in more places. The woods you had been saving can now be chopped into those Temples.
