Civ 6 Wonder Placement Guide
Meenakshi Temple
Required neighbors are shown on the map — the remaining tiles can be anything.
Placement requirements
- Must be adjacent to: Holy Site
- Requires a founded religion
Unlock & cost
- Civic: Civil Service
- Production cost: 710
Wonders that compete for the same tiles
From the placement data: these wonders share a placement requirement with Meenakshi Temple. A city meant to hold both needs a separate qualifying tile for each.
- Hagia Sophia — both next to a Holy Site
- Kotoku-in — both next to a Holy Site
- Mahabodhi Temple — both next to a Holy Site
Is it worth building?
Cheaper gurus who heal your missionary waves — the logistics wing of a religious war machine. If apostles and gurus are your army, this is their barracks.
Placement & timing tips
Holy Site adjacency in your faith production hub. Build before sustained theological wars; its value is proportional to how many religious units you buy after it.
When to build it — and when not to
- Build it when
- Build when the religious map is crowded and hostile — several founders, inquisitors waiting — because guru-supported apostle stacks win wars of attrition that lone missionaries cannot survive.
- Skip it when
- Skip when few rivals founded religions — an uncontested map converts with plain missionaries, no logistics needed. Hagia Sophia's extra charges then advance the same goal with less overhead.
Which city should build it
Make it the barracks of the religious army: the Holy Site city from which you will actually purchase apostles, with a Temple standing so apostles can be bought at all, and roads or a Harbor pointing toward the rival you intend to convert. Faith income should be concentrated here rather than spread, so the ideal host is a Holy Site with mountain or woods adjacency and Work Ethic-style production, not a flat farm town. The wonder tile has no terrain restriction, so use the least valuable side of the Holy Site and save the flat side for Hagia Sophia, which shares the district. A border city near the target civilization beats the capital: religious units bought deep in your interior spend several turns walking, and the gurus that come with the wonder heal only what stands beside them.
Winning the race
Founders only, and Civil Service is a civic everyone passes through, so the religious AIs meet it naturally. But the AI rates Hagia Sophia higher for the same Holy Site frontage, so Saladin or Philip usually turn to Meenakshi only after finishing that one, and that gap is your window. Queue it the turn Civil Service completes and chop one woods; most cities finish inside the medieval era, and if you have reached Divine Right, Gothic Architecture applies. No Great Engineer is needed. The losing sign is gossip of a start from a religious rival who has already completed Hagia Sophia, since that combination means they have moved on to this one. Then keep the chops, buy apostles with the faith instead, and launch the conversion push before their logistics are in place.
If you lose it: alternatives
The unit discount is partly matched by the Theocracy government, and more faith income reaches the same place: relic slots in every Temple, the Scripture policy and suzerainty over a religious city-state fill that gap. Gurus can still be bought with faith without the wonder, so attaching one to each apostle stack solves the healing problem. What should change after a lost Meenakshi is tactics rather than infrastructure: instead of a war of attrition, force short decisive fights with Debater apostles, hold the homeland with inquisitors, and push missionaries through once the rival's units are worn down. Freed hammers go first to Hagia Sophia beside the same Holy Site, then to Temples and roads in the border city facing your conversion target.
