Civ 6 Wonder Placement Guide
Oxford University
Required neighbors are shown on the map — the remaining tiles can be anything.
Placement requirements
- Must be built on: Grassland, Plains
- Must be adjacent to: Campus (with University)
Unlock & cost
- Technology: Scientific Theory
- Production cost: 1240
Wonders that compete for the same tiles
From the placement data: these wonders share a placement requirement with Oxford University. A city meant to hold both needs a separate qualifying tile for each.
- Amundsen-Scott Research Station — both next to a Campus
- Great Library — both next to a Campus
- Terracotta Army — both allowed on Grassland, Plains
- University of Sankore — both next to a Campus
Is it worth building?
Free technologies and a science surge in its city — the classic science-victory checkpoint. The free techs alone justify the hammers in any research race; there is no scenario where it's bad.
Placement & timing tips
Campus with a University required — your top science city by definition. Everyone racing science wants it: pre-place builders or Magnus and win the sprint.
When to build it — and when not to
- Build it when
- Build once your best Campus has its University and the tech tree has reached the expensive tiers — free technologies scale with what they replace, so later completion extracts strictly more value.
- Skip it when
- Skip only under duress — an active war that needs those hammers as units, or a rival visibly about to finish it first. Otherwise delaying beats skipping; the checkpoint waits for you.
Which city should build it
The host is decided by the University clause, but the tile is decided by the terrain list: only flat grassland or plains next to that Campus qualify, so a Campus tucked between mountains and hills can have no legal tile at all. Check this at Education, not at Scientific Theory, and leave one flat tile on the Campus ring unimproved. The capital is usually the right home because it has the Factory-era production to pay the bill, yet a satellite science city with a mountain-and-reef Campus also works if you route trade or Magnus there. Wonder tiles feed Theater Squares, so a science city that also carries a Theater Square gains a culture bump from the same tile.
Winning the race
Contest level is high whenever a science-leaning AI is alive, and it is an Industrial-era wonder, so the wonder-production policy cards that cover the Renaissance and earlier no longer help. What does help: an Industrial-era Great Engineer with wonder charges, woods and rainforest chops that scale up sharply this deep in the tree, and a Factory finished before the tech lands. Gossip reports that someone has started it are the warning; a rival showing higher science per turn than you at Scientific Theory is the earlier one. If the projected turn count exceeds roughly the time it takes an AI to grab two cheaper wonders, prepare the fallback.
If you lose it: alternatives
Losing it is painful but not structural: the same city keeps its University and Research Lab pipeline, so pour the freed production into the Campus research project, which converts hammers into Great Scientist points that eventually buy techs anyway. A Great Scientist who grants a free tech or boosts, plus Eurekas farmed deliberately, recover the two technologies over a few dozen turns. Kilwa Kisiwani with a scientific suzerainty or Amundsen-Scott later fill the science-surge role for those on ice. If the race was lost because production was thin, the Ruhr Valley or a second Industrial Zone is the more durable fix than chasing another wonder.
