Civ 6 Wonder Placement Guide
University of Sankore
Required neighbors are shown on the map — the remaining tiles can be anything.
Placement requirements
- Must be built on: Desert, Desert (Hills)
- Must be adjacent to: Campus (with University)
Unlock & cost
- Technology: Education
- Production cost: 710
Wonders that compete for the same tiles
From the placement data: these wonders share a placement requirement with University of Sankore. A city meant to hold both needs a separate qualifying tile for each.
- Amundsen-Scott Research Station — both next to a Campus
- Great Library — both next to a Campus
- Jebel Barkal — both allowed on Desert (Hills)
- Oxford University — both next to a Campus
- Petra — both allowed on Desert
- Pyramids — both allowed on Desert
Is it worth building?
Science and faith from every trade route sent to its city, plus science for the host. A trade-empire science engine — Mali's signature wonder, and quietly strong for any faith civ with spare routes.
Placement & timing tips
Desert or desert hills next to a Campus with a University — the classic Mali desert city qualifies naturally. Route every domestic trader there afterward; each one feeds the engine.
When to build it — and when not to
- Build it when
- Build when your empire is rich in trade routes but starved for science — gold-first empires with lagging Campuses can reroute existing traders into research instead of rebuilding their infrastructure.
- Skip it when
- Skip when no Campus city touches desert or your traders earn their keep on international gold runs — a University in each existing Campus lifts science without sacrificing that income.
Which city should build it
The tile must be desert or desert hills adjacent to a Campus that already holds a University, so the Campus itself should be planned on the edge of a desert patch, with the University finished before Education-era production is committed. A desert hill next to a mountain is the dream: the Campus takes the mountain adjacency and the wonder takes the hill. It fits a satellite far better than the capital, because the trade-route income depends on routes arriving, and domestic traders naturally flow from the capital outward. Combine it with the Petra city if the desert allows; the same tiles that Petra turns into gold become the destination that Sankore turns into science.
Winning the race
Contest is low outside Mali and Arabia, because most AIs never pair a University with desert terrain; the danger is arriving at Education without the University built, since that building alone takes a young Campus many turns. Gothic Architecture applies, and a Medieval Great Engineer with wonder charges or the desert city's stone and woods chops cover the remaining cost. Magnus with Surplus Logistics speeds the host's growth and sends food back to the cities those routes come from. The warning sign is a rival science leader in a desert start finishing Education first; by the Renaissance the wonder is usually either yours or forgotten, so a late attempt rarely collides with anyone.
If you lose it: alternatives
Science from trade routes has few direct substitutes, but the Triangular Trade and Ecommerce-style cards add gold that buys Libraries and Universities elsewhere, and faith from routes is matched by a Holy Site with Scripture and a religious city-state. Kilwa Kisiwani with a scientific suzerain gives another science boost, and Rationalism card timing in a city that reaches the science threshold outperforms the wonder's flat bonus. Use the freed Medieval production for a second Campus city rather than a bigger first one; two Universities out-research one wonder. The desert hill tile can still become a mine, and the traders should switch to international routes for gold.
