Is it worth building?
Culture and production from every rainforest tile you work. On a jungle-heavy start it converts 'annoying terrain' into a real economy — Brazil and Kongo builds love it; on sparse rainforest it is skippable.
Placement & timing tips
Count your workable rainforest tiles first — the wonder is exactly as good as that number. Don't chop the jungle you plan to profit from.
When to build it — and when not to
- Build it when
- Build when a jungle city has committed to keeping its rainforest — Campus and Holy Site spots already claimed elsewhere — so the tiles it works will stay worked for the rest of the game.
- Skip it when
- Skip when those jungles are worth more as chops — a war push or a district rush funded by harvests beats slow per-tile culture. Guilds-era hammers also stretch further in commercial buildings.
Which city should build it
The wonder sits on a rainforest tile and rewards worked rainforest in that city, so the host is whichever city will keep the most jungle under citizens for the rest of the game. That creates a conflict with the Campus, which also loves rainforest neighbors, and with Lumber Mills later on. Resolve it by giving the Campus the rainforest cluster next to mountains and the Chichen Itza city the broad, flat jungle that would otherwise be farmed away. Coastal or riverside jungle cities are best because they have the food to actually work those tiles rather than starving on them. Brazil and Kongo starts are the obvious fit, but any city with six or more workable rainforest tiles qualifies.
Winning the race
Moderate contest with a strong map dependence: the AI only builds it when it has jungle, so on a temperate map it may go unclaimed for eras, while on a tropical map Pedro or Mvemba a Nzinga will race you for it. Guilds sits on the natural path to Commercial Hub policies, so many civilizations unlock it without meaning to; do not read the unlock as intent. Secure it by chopping the woods and rainforest you do not plan to keep, keeping the tiles you do plan to keep, and running Gothic Architecture. Isidore of Miletus is a fair use here. You are losing if a jungle-heavy rival is already showing culture yields on tiles you can see and their capital completed a medieval wonder recently.
If you lose it: alternatives
Rainforest can pay without the wonder. Lumber Mills become available on rainforest tiles once Mercantilism arrives, turning the same jungle into a production economy, and a Campus ringed by rainforest collects adjacency while the tiles stay unimproved. Culture per tile is replaced empire-wide by a Theater Square and Amphitheater in the same city, which also gives Great Writer points the wonder never offered. If the jungle is expendable, the strongest alternative is to harvest it: a burst of chops in the Guilds era funds a Commercial Hub, a Market and a trader in one go, and that gold compounds faster than a trickle of culture from six tiles.
